2012 CAMP FULBRIGHT JUNIOR INTERNSHIP
PROGRAM ANNOUNCEMENT

The Korean-American Educational Commission (KAEC), which administers the Fulbright program in Korea, would like to invite students from U.S. schools in the 8th to 10th grade to apply for the Camp Fulbright Junior Internship Program.  The program, held in conjunction with our annual Camp Fulbright summer camp, is a three-week cultural exchange program through which middle and high school students from the U.S. can meet and interact with students from from all over Korea.  Camp Fulbright 2012 will be held at Jungwon University in the Goesan area near the city of Cheongju.

Participants in the program will experience Korean culture through language classes and hands-on cultural activities, and participate in workshops to build leadership, teamwork, and other skills.  They will also assist our camp staff—a team comprised of Fulbright grantees from the U.S. and a group of Korean counselors—in camp preparation and operation, and join in activities with the Korean campers.

Selection of participants in this program will be highly competitive, and it is recommended that individuals, schools, organizations, or others interested in sending students work quickly to find qualified candidates and send in applications by the deadline.

From the Camp Fulbright Director (to be updated):

Greetings from Fulbright Korea and thank you for your interest in Camp Fulbright!

The Camp Fulbright Junior Internship Program (CFJIP) held jointly with our annual Camp Fulbright summer program and the Fulbright English Teaching Assistant (ETA) grant program orientation.  We at the Korean-American Educational Commission (KAEC) work tirelessly each year to prepare Camp Fulbright--Korea's best English summer camp program.  The Camp Fulbright Junior Internship Program, which has been an official part of Camp Fulbright since 2009, brings middle and high school students from the U.S. to participate in a cultural immersion program, assist with camp preparation and execution, and meet students from all over Korea.

CFJIP participants, referred to as Junior Counselors (JCs), not only have the opportunity to learn about Korean language and culture; they also serve as leaders and cultural ambassadors, make new friends, and have the opportunity to meet and work with many of our Fulbright grantees.  Our JCs have played a key role in our camp's success for the last two years, and we are looking forward recruiting another fine team of JCs for Camp Fulbright 2011.

Program information is above and in the application forms.  Here is some additional information:

  1. The number of JCs for the 2011 summer program will be similar to last year, but the number of new applicants who will be accepted into the program will depend on the number of qualified former participants who wish to reapply for a second or third year.
  2. This year, we will consider applications from students from grades 8-11.
    1. For 8th graders, we will consider only students who can demonstrate through their application and interview that they possess the leadership experience, maturity, and work ethic to handle the demands of the program.
    2. All applicants must demonstrate a strong desire to learn about Korea.
  3. Strong candidates are those who are strong academically, participate in a variety of extracurricular activities, have leadership experience, and those who have something unique to contribute to the program.

Our goal is to recruit a diverse team of JCs who are strong in all areas and who are passionate about the learning experience offered at Camp Fulbright.

Please let me know if you have any other questions about the Camp Fulbright Junior Internship Program.  My contact information is below.

From our Program Alumni:

"At Camp Fulbright I learned what it means to be a global citizen – to see beyond stereotypes, to learn another language, to understand the nuances of a different culture, and to completely immerse myself within a country other than my own.  I came home with a broader understanding of the world around me and a more complete vision of the person I want to be. That summer almost two years ago has influenced every second of my life since…The Camp Fulbright Junior Internship Program motivated me to discover a better and more open-minded version of myself, and for that I am eternally grateful."  -- Ellen Swicord (CFJIP 2009)

"The people at Camp Fulbright constantly humble me by enlightening me to the fact that it is, in fact, a small world after all. Kids will always be kids, and that regardless of where we live, whether it be the bustling metropolis of Seoul or the quiet suburbs of Carmel, we share a greater, human bond which connects us all and emphasizes that we despite the distance, we are not that different after all." --Leo Kim (CFJIP 2009, 2010)

"As I look back upon the experience I had in Korea, I remember all the lessons learned and the laughs enjoyed.  I reminisce on the smiles shared by both the campers and the Fulbright staff.  I know I am truly blessed to have been chosen out of so many to travel abroad to such a wonderful country as Korea.  When I think of the knowledge I gained and the fun I had, I think of an unbelievable, once in a life time opportunity." --Julia Gray (CFJIP 2010)

"I made new friends that I bonded with greatly and will cherish forever. It seems unreal that I made such great connections in such a short amount of time, but I am certain that these connections have forever changed me for the better. My experience at Camp Fulbright is one that I will never forget." --Nick Schebaum (CFJIP 2010)

"My Camp Fulbright experience this last summer was quite possibly the most memorable and life-changing experience of my life. Not only do I think about Korea and the campers of Camp Fulbright everyday, I use the skills and lessons I learned while in Korea, constantly. Camp Fulbright gave me courage. I am a much more outgoing, positive, and helpful person after attending camp. It is funny to me, how flying half way across the world played such a significant part in realizing who I am." --Michaela Easterday (CFJIP 2010)

"When I first landed in Korea, I felt something that I cannot describe. It might have been just a mixture of jetlag and fatigue, but I think it was something more. I felt excitement at being in a new country, nervousness at being so far away from home, and genuine happiness. I could not believe that I was going to be able to not only get to know this amazing country, but to do so with students my own age.  Camp Fulbright has influenced me in many ways. It gave me a new perspective of the world and helped me form new friendships. It has even made me consider studying international studies when I go to college. Camp Fulbright was a mind opening experience and one that I hope to embark on again."  Michael Galperin (CFJIP 2009)
